The group stages end in disappointment for Ospreys, even if they have qualified for the knockout stages.

Their perfect December put them in a good position to push for ties in Bridgend but a loss to Zebre in Parma and then this defeat to Montpellier means they will go on their travels.

Ospreys finish fourth in Pool One, slipping below Connacht on points difference.

This was a missed opportunity after Ross Moriarty's try put them in the lead on the hour.

Ospreys couldn't finish the job and now will face either Benetton in Treviso or Ulster in Belfast.

If the Italians win in Lyon tomorrow then Mark Jones' men will face Ulster, if the French side triumph then Ospreys are off to Treviso.

It'll be a tough task either way.

At least Ospreys are in the last 16 with Dragons and Cardiff but the Welsh sides face a tough task to go deep in the tournament after missing out on home advantage.

They started the second half well, but they maybe just gave themselves too much to do after the first half and especially in the last 15 minutes.

Montpellier's power, discipline and pace was just a lot better than Ospreys' tonight.

Ospreys will be gutted after that second half, they came out on fire, they won scrums and limited Montpellier to an extent.

But on the whole I think Montpellier in the last 15 minutes showed maturity, understanding and they just squeezed Ospreys and forced them to make mistakes.

Ospreys' discipline disappeared completely in that last 15 and they gave Montpellier territory, and their power made the difference tonight.

  4. Ospreys 'totally good enough to win'published at 22:01 GMT 17 January

    FT: Ospreys 26-31 Montpellier

    Gwyn Jones
    Former Wales captain on S4C

Such a shame that Ospreys have lost a game that they were totally good enough to win.

Mistakes and a lack of discipline in crucial moments has handed the game to Montpellier.

Ospreys fail to earn a home tie in the last 16.

Defeat to Montpellier - who are now top seeds in the knockout stages - means that the Welsh side slip to fourth in the pool.

Scrum penalty to Montpellier and the French side point for the posts.

That will kill the last minute and secure victory, regardless of whether it goes over.

Alex Masibaka, who scored two tries in the first half and was to the fore for Montpellier, is named as the official man of the match.

Phil Cokanasiga was probably Ospreys' top performer.

Is that it? Ospreys fail to claim their line-out and it's a scrum to Montpellier with the clock ticking.

    Ospreys 26-28 Montpellier

Good defence by Ospreys to stay in this.

They are deep inside their own half but a couple of penalties would get them within sight of a late winner.

    There is still hope.

  11. Postpublished at 74 mins

    Ospreys 26-28 Montpellier

Ospreys try to play their way out of their half but knock on.

That's followed by a free-kick at the scrum and then a no-arms tackle.

Montpellier will stay in Ospreys territory by kicking to the 22.

As things stand, Ospreys will finish fourth in the group and travel to either Benetton or Ulster.

Speaking on S4C, Wales lock Adam Beard said: "I keep an eye out on the boys [his former side Ospreys] every week, but tonight's the night I want them to lose because obviously my new team are Montpellier.

"But it's great to see familiar faces and some of the boys and coaches who I played most of my career with.

"I've got a little niggle, a bit of nerve damage [in his shoulder] but I'm hoping to be back in the next couple of weeks. I did ask if I could strap it up and play against the boys tonight, but probably a week too early."

  13. Try reviewpublished at 71 mins

    Ospreys 26-28 Montpellier

    Do Montpellier have a clincher?

They work a move down the front and replacement Solomon Shand reaches out for the line. He looks to be just short. It's a matter of centimetres.

Just short and Ospreys will have a scrum to clear their lines.

    They are alive. Just.

    Ospreys 26-28 Montpellier

A poor few minutes for Ospreys, who lose the chance of an attacking scrum because Kian Hire sparked a scuffle with hands to the face.

A 50:22 earns Montpellier another attacking chance... and then a penalty that they will kick right into the corner.

The whole thing started with Ospreys giving penalties away and surrendering territory to Montpellier.

Fair play to the French side they went through phase after phase and got their reward in the end.

Converted try: Ospreys 26-28 Montpellierpublished at 66 mins

    Hounkpatin try, Hogg con

Heavy carry upon heavy carry by Montpellier in the Ospreys' 22 and eventually prop Wilfrid Hounkpatin reaches over.

That is a vital score. Montpellier are now within touching distance of top spot courtesy of their bonus, regardless of if they hold on for victory.

Ospreys would need to win by 14 points or more to take top spot.

Try: Ospreys 26-21 Montpellierpublished at 58 mins

    Moriarty try

What a score and Ospreys HAVE turned it around.

They work space down the left and then Cokanasiga and Conbeer stay calm to put Moriarty running free down the left.

Nobody was going to stop the former Brive man.

Walsh's conversion is wide but Ospreys have their bonus point.

All to play for in this group, with 20 minutes to play. Ospreys currently second as things stand, which would earn a home tie.

    Shane Williams

Fair play to Ospreys they've come out in the second half got into Montpellier's face, been physical and kept the ball a lot better.

    They deserve to be level.

    Ospreys 21-21 Montpellier

Stuart Hogg puts Montpellier five metres out with a penalty.

Ospreys defend the drive well and then win a penalty to relieve the pressure after the French side go off their feet.

Just not happening for Montpellier in the second half, so all credit to the hosts.
